What are the signs and symptoms of poisoning?
Disorientation, vomiting, seizures, weakness, retching, excessive salivating, known exposure to toxins or human medications
Take these actions:
Consult your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY and have toxic agent package information available. DO NOT induce vomiting unless advised by your veterinarian. If professional medical help is unavailable, contact the Animal Poison Control Center 24 hours a day at the number above. The APCC is staffed by veterinarians with extensive experience with pet poisonings.
The NAPCC charges a small fee which can be billed to your phone or a credit card. If you do call NAPCC, please record the case number they give you for future reference. Your veterinarian can use this case number for additional recommendations, should the need arise.
Common household poisons include:
- Ethylene glycol (antifreeze)
- Chocolate
- Rodent poison
- Various common household plants and flowers
- Chewing gum containing xylitol
- Raisins and grapes
- Acetaminophen or Tylenol and other pain relievers including Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and
non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Prescription medications for humans
- Nicotine
- Marijuana and other street drugs
